Learning Journal

Observation, Learning and Progression

During your child’s time at Kylemore Nursery your child’s class teacher and nursery assistant will create a learning journal for your child.  This is a record of your child's learning and development throughout their time at nursery. This record will include observations and photos of your child and will be built up during the school year.  It will show your child’s achievements and interests during their time at nursery school. Your child’s class teacher will share photos and give a short update on the Seesaw App every term.

The aim of the learning journal is to:

Celebrate children’s achievements throughout their time in nursery.

Highlight the discoveries children make.

Monitor skills that children are developing.

Enable staff to plan effectively in order to meet children’s needs.

Show children’s progression.

Record children’s viewpoints.

Serve as a reminder of the wonderful experiences that they have.

Focus Children

Every week the staff choose three focus children to observe during the sessions.  During this time the staff team gather observations and photos of the focus children and add them to the child’s learning journal.  Teachers will give parents/guardians an update on Seesaw after their child’s focus week.  We welcome and encourage you to add comments and share any pictures of your child from activities outside school.  Your child will be a focus child once every term.

The children will not be aware that it is their focus week as the staff will be completing observations during high quality adult interactions guided by the children’s own interests and needs. Close observation of every child in nursery ensures children are continually making progress and developing new skills. We might teach them a specific skill or how to use something, we introduce new language, we extend the child’s thinking by talking to them, we suggest problems and support the children to find their own solutions and we use technology and/or books to support us in finding out more.

Class Updates

We know parents love to get an insight into what is happening in nursery.  We will endeavour to give regular class updates and pictures of visitors to nursery.  Take the time with your child to look at the pictures/videos and use them as a prompt to get them talking about their day and their learning at nursery.

Parent Meetings

Parents/carers will be invited in term 1 and 2 for a parent teacher meeting to talk about your child’s progress with their teacher.  A report is created for each child in term 3 outlining progress in each area of learning. Parents/carers receive a copy of this report, and another copy is sent to the child’s primary school with your consent.

If you have any concerns or worries before the parent meeting, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Our main aim throughout the year is to ensure that every child enjoys their year in nursery and becomes more confident, capable, caring and communicative.
